CTO as a Service: when it makes sense for your company

Lúmen Corp5 min read

Every company that depends on technology needs someone accountable for it: architecture, team, vendors, security and costs. But not every company is ready to hire a full-time CTO. That is where CTO as a Service comes in.

What it is, in practice

A senior technical leader working part-time, taking part in strategic decisions, structuring the team and processes and following execution. They bring experience from other companies and industries without the cost and lead time of an executive hire.

When it makes sense

  • The company grew faster than its IT and nobody sees the whole picture: systems, contracts and risks.
  • There is a digital product to build and no one to translate the business into architecture and a roadmap.
  • The vendor relationship has become dependence, with no KPIs or ability to assess what is delivered.
  • A big decision is coming: a migration, a new platform, international expansion or entry into a regulated market.
A CTO’s job is not to write code. It is to make sure the right technology is being built the right way.

How to tell it is working

Within a few months the signs appear: clear priorities, a roadmap the board understands, vendors under SLAs, a more autonomous team and documented technical decisions. And when the time comes to hire a full-time CTO, the house will be in order for them.
